Hg2 city guides for iPhone

The App Store is rapidly becoming crowded with apps offering the inside scoop or guidebook details on cities, from free Triposo apps that skim user content from the net to the more recognised brands of Lonely Planet and TimeOut. All have their uses, but perhaps the most alluring are the Hg2 (Hedonist’s guide to…) city guides.

Downloaded as a single app, a host of cities from Almaty to Zurich, by way of Mumbai, are available to download when you boot it up. Hosting the content on the phone itself, you’re free of roaming charges when exploring abroad – but be sure to download over Wi-Fi as these files could eat into your data allowance.

Compiled by writers, editors and insiders working in the travel industry, the app is packed with only the very best places to eat, drink, sleep and shop – plus the usual cultural attractions and activities not to be missed – divided into categories such as: achingly hip, neighbourhood vibe and old school.

Given a luxury feel – all black and gold – photos, star ratings, price and contact details are provided for each entry – and places are even pinpointed using Google maps – not Apple’s own. An easy itinerary option lets you plan out a schedule with a simple tap, while the City Utilities function holds key information on emergency services and a currency converter.
